How to Choose the Right Evolv Dog Crate Size for Your Breed

Quick Answer

To choose the right Evolv Dog Crate size, measure your dog's length from nose to tail base and height from floor to top of head or ears. Add 2-4 inches for comfort. For most breeds, the Evolv S fits dogs up to 25 inches long and 20 inches tall, but always check the size chart. If your dog is between sizes, consider the larger option for long-term comfort.

Choosing the right crate size is crucial for your dog's comfort and safety. A crate that's too small can cause anxiety and physical discomfort, while one that's too large may reduce the den-like security dogs naturally seek. This guide helps you measure your dog accurately and match them to the Evolv Dog Crate size that fits best.

Evolv offers a modular design that converts from a crate to a playpen, making size selection even more important. The right fit ensures your dog can stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably, while also providing enough room for a bed pad. We'll walk you through the steps and highlight key trade-offs.

How to Measure Your Dog for an Evolv Crate

Start by measuring your dog's length from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail. This is the most critical measurement because dogs typically lie stretched out. Next, measure height from the floor to the top of the head or ears (whichever is higher) when your dog is standing. Use these measurements to compare with the crate's interior dimensions.

Add 2 to 4 inches to both length and height for comfort. This extra space allows your dog to shift positions without feeling cramped. For puppies, consider their adult size if you're buying for the long term. However, if the crate is for training, a smaller size with a divider can be useful initially.

• Measure twice, buy once: always double-check your measurements.
• If your dog is between sizes, opt for the larger crate to avoid early outgrowing.

Breed-Specific Size Considerations

Different breeds have different body shapes. For example, long-bodied breeds like Dachshunds need extra length, while deep-chested breeds like Greyhounds need more height. Consider your dog's unique proportions, not just weight. The Evolv S is designed for small to medium breeds, but always verify with the size chart.

For large breeds, you may need to explore other crate options if Evolv's sizes don't accommodate them. The Evolv Dog Crate is a 2-in-1 crate and playpen, but its size range may not extend to very large dogs. Always measure your dog against the crate's dimensions before purchasing.

• Measure your dog's breed-specific proportions to ensure a proper fit.

The Role of Bed Pads and Accessories

Adding a bed pad can affect the usable space inside the crate. For instance, the Bolstr Evolv Bed is designed to fit perfectly with the Evolv crate, providing a bolstered headrest for comfort. However, it takes up some floor space, so consider its thickness when sizing. The Snooz Revol Pad is another option, but note that it can't be used with the puppy divider installed.

When choosing a pad, ensure it fits within the crate without reducing the space too much. A pad that's too large can make the crate feel cramped. Always check the pad's dimensions against your crate's interior.

• Measure your chosen bed pad and subtract its dimensions from the crate's interior space.

Decision Rules for Choosing the Right Size

• Measure length and height: Measure your dog's length from nose to tail base and height from floor to top of head/ears. Add 2-4 inches for comfort. This gives you the minimum interior dimensions needed.
• Compare with Evolv dimensions: Check the Evolv crate's interior dimensions against your measurements. If your dog's length+extra is within the crate's length, it's a good fit. If in doubt, choose the larger size if available.
• Consider bed pad thickness: If using a bed pad like Bolstr, subtract its height from the crate's height to ensure your dog can still stand comfortably. A pad that's too thick may reduce headroom.
